Iwo - Stakeholders in the Osun PDP have warned the party leadership against the imposition of a governorship candidate on party members for the 2014 election.
A statement signed by Mr Kayode Oladeji, aide to former Gov. Olagunsoye Oyinlola, on Thursday and posted online, stated that the politicians had vowed to resist such move through legal means.
According to the statement, some individuals in the party are already scheming to act against the party’s constitution in this regard.
It said that the fears were expressed at a meeting held in Iwo and chaired by Mr Joseph Obadare, the PDP leader from Ife/Ijesa Zone, with scores of PDP members across the state in attendance.
The PDP stalwarts insisted that imposing an unpopular candidate would not augur well for the party at the polls.
"We won’t take anything short of primaries," the statement said, quoting the stalwarts.
It identified Mr Debo Ayinde from Ede, Alhaji Debo Badru and Mrs Bimbo Oyinlola, elder brother of the former Gov. Olagunsoye Oyinlola among stalwarts who spoke in thei regard.
The statement also quoted Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, a former PDP Governorship Candidate, as appealing to the party members to keep calm at all times.
Akinbade assured his supporters that he would emerge victorious at the end of the day.
"We don’t need any form of thuggery; this is because we have all it takes to win in the primaries and the general election.
"Our optimism is reinforced in the fact that we have God and the people on our side.
"Just keep calm. I can assure you that I am in the race for good and can never be intimated by anybody.
"Like our members have been clamouring for, I won’t take anything short of free and fair primaries where I am sure, I will emerge as the party's candidate," he said.
